The Different Fire Safety Signs And What They Mean

Fire safety signs are essential for everyday safety and in the event of a fire emergency in the workplace. These signs can be found around the shopping centres, offices, residential buildings, schools, and other locations. They use recognisable wording symbols to advise people about safety equipment and procedures. In the UK, BS 5499 regulates any safety warning, including various fire safety signs. Fire safety signs with green and white colours signify safe conditions. Blue safety signs emphasise on mandatory actions that require people to carry out specific actions. Red fire safety signs are used to prohibit certain actions and inform about the location of essential equipment.

Keeping that in mind, we are going to take a look at some of the different fire safety signs that you should know about:

Fire Alarm Call Point Sign- this sign directs people to the exact location of the fire alarm call point that’s useful for raising an alarm when there’s a fire. You need to break the glass and activate the alarm system by pushing the button. The system may have a backup battery, which is useful when there’s no electricity.

Fire Hose Reel Sign- this sign marks the placement of usable fire hose reels. Trained staff may use fire hose reels before the arrival of firemen, but only if the situation is relatively under control. This sign should be mounted adjacent to or above the fire hose reel.

Fire Extinguisher Sign- extinguishers are crucial to quickly smother fire before it spreads and becomes out of control. The sign is usually rectangular in shape and may include descriptions about the fire extinguisher. The most common fire extinguisher sign is red, but it can be green. Instructions provide details about what the extinguisher should be used for. It is important to ensure the safety and proper use of the extinguisher. Inappropriate use may cause injuries and damage to other equipment. Fire extinguishers must be easy to access and simple to use.

Prohibition Signs- prohibition signs are a combination of red and white colours. They prohibit people from doing risky actions. Fire safety prohibition signs include general prohibition, no smoking, no electric cigarettes, no naked fires, and no mobile phones. Building occupants and workers should be clearly informed about inappropriate activities that may pose fire hazard or other related risks.

Exit Signs- exit signs are usually green and white, with oblong or square shape. The word EXIT must be clearly visible, even in the dark. One Exit sign must lead to another Exit sign, until people can safely get out of the building.
